WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING?

Jan 12, 2022

A lot of people assume LED lights are a 21st century innovation, but in fact they were believed to be invented back in 1927, and first released for domestic use in 2002. Over the past century they’ve been slowly developed into what we have today – affordable, efficient lighting alternatives.

What is an LED?

A light emitting diode (or LED) is a device that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. Light is produced when the particles that carry the current (known as electrons and holes) combine within the semiconductor material.

Why should I be using LED lighting?

1. Efficiency

Replacing a single 40-watt light bulb with an LED light will reduce around 160kg of CO2 emissions per year. If this is converted to a 200-light warehouse, it is an enormous reduction in energy usage.

They use far less energy than the older filament light bulbs, which comes with a whole host of benefits.

2. Environmentally friendly

Being more efficient, LED lighting is naturally better for the environment because you require less energy usage than a traditional bulb.

See here how we helped a school with 1152 pupils improve their Energy Performance Certificate grade from a D to a C, with a saving of more than £26,000 per year on electricity bills!

3. Safety

LED’s operate at a far lower temperature than regular bulbs. Filament light bulbs only produce light from 10% of its energy usage, the rest goes to heat. LED’s, however, contribute closer to 70% of their energy to light, meaning they run much cooler.

There is a far smaller risk of the LED lights causing so much heat they cause a fire, which is surprisingly common with halogen lightbulbs!

4. Instant lighting

LED light will turn on at full brightness immediately after turning on the light switch – forget waiting for the lights to flicker on or ‘get bright enough’!

5. Longevity

Most lightbulbs will last for around 1000 hours whilst turned on. LED bulbs range from cheaper options around 4000-5000 hours, all the way up to 25000 hours for more premium versions. LED bulbs massively outlast traditional bulbs.

6. Better working environment

Many surveys have shown that incandescent, fluorescent and halogen lighting can make working environments less enjoyable places to be. Headaches, tiredness and stress have all been linked with poor light quality and, with productivity suffering, can negatively impact your businesses productivity. LED lighting runs at a much higher rate, giving a much better quality that’s not dissimilar to daylight. Better working environments result in an improved quality of work and concentration.

SCI Management Electrical contractors have spent more than decade designing and installing LED lighting solutions into industrial and commercial premises, helping them reap the numerous benefits listed.
